Chapter Sixteen

Cassius

There was a knock on my door.

Did the kitchen send another bag of blood? These humans were certainly going out of their way to be courteous toward me. It made me suspicious. Still, there was no reason to waste a delicious snack. I made my way toward the door and turned the knob. A man in a reaper uniform stood in the hallway.

There was nothing in his hands. “Can I help you?”

The reaper straightened his back. “Are you Prince Cassius Stoica?”

He addressed me formally, which made me curious. “I am.”

“Your presence is requested, Prince Cassius,” he bowed. “I am here to escort you to the executive offices.”

No one from the Order has contacted me since I arrived, which seemed odd since they were trying to kill me a short time ago. I couldn’t do what they asked without reservation. That would be foolish. This invitation could be an ambush or something just as vile, but what? I crossed my arms. “What is the purpose of this request?”

“That information is classified,” he replied with a serious tone.

Classified? “That’s convenient.”

His jaw clenched, but only for a second. “If you are hesitant to come with me, I was supposed to tell you that Mina Van Helsing made the request.”

Interesting that Mina expected that I might not come without her presence. Perhaps she understood me a tad more than I realized. That, or she thought I would be too scared to decline her request. Either way, I had to go. All of this secrecy had my curiosity tingling. “Please wait in the hallway while I prepare.”

“Thank you, Your Highness,” the reaper replied as he shut the door.

In a situation like this, I would normally wear an outfit befitting a prince. Unfortunately, all I had at the moment was the same crappy reaper outfits as everyone else. That didn’t leave me with much to do, so I headed for the bathroom. I washed my face, brushed my teeth, and combed my hair. I had to, at least, attempt to look presentable.

Once I finished, I opened the door and signaled my reaper escort that I was ready to go. He never said another word as I strode behind my guard. We entered the elevators, and he inserted a card and manually typed a code into the keypad. We must’ve been heading into a restricted area. Anticipation grew in my belly. I couldn’t wait to see what this was all about.

The escort took us to the top floor of the building. He led me down a long hallway, passing by several offices. We reached the last office, and he knocked on the door. When the door opened, Mina was the first person I saw. I didn’t recognize any of the other humans with her. But, judging by their expressions of disdain, they weren’t all that excited to meet me.

An older man in a business suit sat at a large desk. When our eyes connected, he rose from his leather chair. “We haven’t been formally introduced. I am Edgar Brenner, the CEO of the Order,” he gave a quick bow.
